UPDATE: Man died in river Tuesday

SUNBURY – It is being reported that one of the sailors on the boat that capsized Tuesday afternoon on the Susquehanna River under the PPL dam has died. The Daily Item is reporting that 71-year-old Nathan Zahn of Wilmington, Delaware died while the other fisherman was uninjured.

Northumberland County Communications told WKOK the incident occurred just before 2 p.m., when a boat got stranded in the turbulent waters below the PPL Dam and eventually capsized. It was originally reported that one of the fisherman was injured and taken to Geisinger Medical Center.

John Clifford, the Shikellamy State Park manager told WKOK in a recent interview, the area below the PPL dam, and immediately below the fabridam, is extremely dangerous. He said the hydraulics don’t permit swimmers or boaters to escape and get downstream. He said the only advice he knew for those stuck below the dam was to try to move parallel to the dam, toward shore. He said the best practice is to stay away from the dam, and to never boat or kayak over the dams. (Christopher Elio)
