SHAMOKIN DAM – The law of unintended consequences is at play in Lewisburg where Northumberland’s construction project sends hundreds of unwanted trucks through downtown Lewisburg. Many Lewisburg residents and leaders are complaining about truck traffic on Route 45 due to the $ 13 million, three year Duke Street project in Northumberland. Now Valley officials are initiating steps to hopefully find solutions.
Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Bob Garrett, “What we’re going to be doing is holding a roundtable for folks to speak to PennDOT to find out what are the tools to try to get that commercial traffic to stay on the designated truck detour, which does not take that traffic through downtown Lewisburg.”
The chamber will announce a date, time, and location soon. Garrett says all the local and state police departments are invited to attend as well, “We will try to have as many of the officials, the decision makers if you will, as we can to be there. I think we all agree we have a problem. What we don’t is the solution quite yet.”
Garrett says representatives from area trucking companies are also invited. He does say some local officials are working with those trucking companies to see what options are available in the meantime. (Matt Catrillo)
