NORTHUMBERLAND – A train full of toys will soon be making its way through The Valley. Members of the North American Railcar Operators Association will travel from Northumberland to Berwick collecting donations for Toys For Tots along the way.
The railcars are the small ‘speeder’ railcars which hold two or more people and were used by rail work crews. They’re now collectibles.
Larry Maynard coordinates the event and says they expect a big train of railcars for the event Saturday, December 5, “We could conceivably end up with 30 to 35, or even more, cars. It’s going to be quite a spectacle.”
The railcars leave from the North Shore Railroad office around 8:30a.m and will arrive at the Danville Middle School between 9:15 and 9:45a.m. They’ll stop at the crossing in Rupert around 10:15a.m before heading on to Bloomsburg, “In Bloomsburg we don’t stop anywhere specifically. If we see people, we will stop. When we cross East Street we have to put all the crossing gates and stuff down there, so we’re there maybe for ten minutes or so for anyone who wants to come down.”
The final stop is at the BIDA complex in Berwick between 12:30 and 1:00p.m. Maynard says they can accept new, unwrapped toys or checks made out to Toys for Tots.
