DANVILLE— A local utility is among the first in country to use drones as a commercial tool. PPL Electric Utilities will be using drones to monitor and help maintain their 48,000 miles of powerlines. They have contracted Hazon Solutions to fly and maintain the drones for the next three years.
Duke Dietz, Hazon’s director of transportation and energy, says drones can be used to inspect power lines, “We provide them with the images for the professional criteria to look at what is at fault what is not and what do we need to take immediate action on.”
Drones can take higher resolution pictures than helicopters and can safely get closer to power lines. PPL provided a demonstration of the drones on Wednesday and you can see video at WKOK.com (Jack Spaulding)
