SELINSGROVE – A high profile gay activist is coming to the Valley. Michael Sam, a former University of Missouri football star and current NFL free agent, who made a career changing announcement that he was gay, is coming to Susquehanna University.
The university says Sam will headline a week honoring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Sam will speak at SU January 21 at 7 p.m. in the Degenstein Center Theater, located in the Charles Degenstein Campus Center. The event is free.
Sam played for the University of Missouri and was primed to be an early-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. But before then, he came out as gay during an ESPN interview, sending shockwaves through the sports world. He was then eventually drafted by the then St. Louis Rams in the last round. Among his many accolades, Sam was awarded ESPN’s Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2014 ESPY’s.
