NORTHUMBERLAND — Some timely letters, written more than 200 years ago, are compiled in a new book, ‘Letters to the Inhabitants of Northumberland and it’s Neighbors.’ The author was Joseph Priestley, but there is a new editor of the book–John Moore of Northumberland. He modernized the letters to make them readable in the modern age.
Priestley was persecuted and and lied about from the time he stepped off the boat from England. Moore says Priestley was harassed by a man who used the name, Peter Porcupine, who was considered the ‘Andrew Brietbart’ of the day.
Moore said local churches wouldn’t let Priestley preach locally because of his Unitarian beliefs, but he did preach at his home, which is now the Priestley museum. You can hear more from Moore in a recent interview on WKOK Sunrise.
