Watsontown Dental is hosting a Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Donor Registration event on Sat April 29 from 10am – 1pm. Stop in at anytime during that period to be added to the national database for stem cell or bone marrow transplants. Blood cancers, including leukemia, are the third leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Only 30% of patients needing stem cell or bone marrow transplants are able to find a match within their family.
The other 70% depend on the donor database. This treatment is life-saving and the more people who are willing to be on the database and donate their bone marrow or stem cells to a matching patient, the more lives can be saved. All expenses for both donors and patients are covered by the marrow registry. Anyone between the ages of 18 and 55 in reasonably good health can be added to the database. All that is required is to read a short description of the process, fill out a form, and swab the inside of your cheeks for the cell sample that is sent to the registry.
